Plans have been put forward to build up to five homes on land behind a bungalow in Lower Broadheath.

But neighbours have objected, with one describing a main road through the village as being “like a race track”.

A proposal submitted to Malvern Hills District Council includes the “partial or full demolition” of the bungalow, called High View.

It suggests building up to five homes on a square parcel of land between Bell Lane, Partridge Lane and Willow Field Drive.

According to the application’s planning statement: “The site has direct foot and cycle access to the services and amenities of the village of Lower Broadheath via the highway footpath on the south side of Bell Lane.

“The site also has access to the bus services that run along Bell Lane and Martley Road from the site without the need for the private motor car.

“The site does not contain any listed buildings or scheduled ancient monuments and is not within a conservation area. The site is not within any recognised protected landscape area, is not within the greenbelt or SSI.”

Neighbour Jonathon Wardle said: “Bell Lane is now like a race track, asking to build houses on it is a dangerous game to play.

“Someone will get hurt, or worse, the way people drive down here. Visibility out of the driveways and side roads is bad enough, too.

“The speed issues needs sorting before any more houses are built. Adding up to five more houses seems irresponsible.”

Joan Lucy added: “I feel that putting another junction on the very busy Bell Lane is ridiculous.”

An immediate neighbour of the property said they would like to see the land tidied up. They objected to the plans but said they would be in favour of the development if the boundary fence was at least two metres from their property.

Another neighbour described the proposal as “backland development” and said it would set a precedent for building outside the existing village boundaries.
