Ahead of Oxford United’s League One play-off final against Bolton Wanderers, players Joe Bennett and Billy Boden are encouraging the public to learn CPR.

Mr Bennett and Mr Boden took part in CPR training at Oxford’s training ground, under the guidance of the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

It is part of Sky Bet and BHF's Every Minute Matters campaign, aiming to teach CPR to more than a quarter of a million people.

In support of the campaign, Sky Bet has committed to raise £3 million to support BHF's work.

Sky Bet is contributing £10,000 for every goal scored in the Championship, League One and League Two play-offs.

Contributions from United's goals account for £20,000 towards the total of £250,000 donated by Sky Bet, based on the 25 goals scored in this year's play-offs.

More than 27,000 people have learnt CPR during the first two weeks of the Every Minute Matters campaign.

Oxford United fullback Mr Bennett said: "Learning CPR is a really valuable life skill that I think as many people as possible should have.

"It’s actually surprising how simple and straightforward leaning CPR is, and you can learn in as little as 15 minutes.

"I’d urge all Oxford United fans in the lead up to the big game at the weekend to take a few minutes out their day and learn this lifesaving skill."

Midfielder Mr Boden added: "It’s been genuinely fascinating to learn CPR.

"I think before today I was under the impression that CPR is really complicated, but the truth is anyone can learn the skills to potentially one day save someone’s life.

"I’d encourage all U’s fans out there to step up and show their support by learning CPR with the help of the BHFs simple training video."

Ella Lazenby, community resuscitation delivery manager at the BHF, said: "It’s so encouraging that current players like Joe and Billy are so passionate and eager to learn CPR and help drive awareness of the Sky Bet and BHF Every Minute Matters campaign.

"These lifesaving skills really can be the difference between life and death.

"That’s why we’re urging everyone to take 15 minutes – the length of the half-time interval – to learn CPR via our free online tool.

“Together we hope we will equip thousands more fans with the knowledge and confidence to perform CPR and use a defibrillator."

In the next 12 months, Every Minute Matters, launched on May 1, aims to engage 270,000 people – equivalent to three times the capacity of Wembley Stadium – to learn CPR in just 15 minutes using RevivR, the BHF’s free digital tool.
