IT’S a scene that would be the envy of many across the country; a view across the Faithful City stretching so far the Malvern Hills appear in the distance.

And people living in three tower block flats in St John’s will get to see it a lot once a £5 million revamp of the buildings is complete – as well as saving money.

Worcester Community Housing is upgrading the landmark buildings to make the blocks more energy efficient and bring the stunning skyline to life.

External cladding, new windows, balcony screens and two rooftop gardens are included as part of the mix, as well as a special glassed-in ‘residents lounge’ in the third tower.

Worcester MP Robin Walker went to see how the work was progressing this week and said he was impressed by the “incredible” views.

“It was fantastic to visit this development, which has been hard to miss for the last few months and see the positive regeneration taking place at this site,” he said.

“The views from the top are incredible and this work will bring a welcomed revival for the towers with improved facilities for current and future residents.

“It is also very good news that residents can expect to save hundreds of pounds on their heating when the work is complete.

“I look forward to seeing the work being completed to a modern landmark site in Worcester.”

Worcester Community Housing say the work is progressing well, with 100 metres of insulation currently being placed on the outer walls to keep in the heat.

The roofing is also being insulated as part of the work, and applies to Cripplegate House, Henwick House and Severn House.

Mike Rothwell, head of property investment, said: “We are committed to making a difference to local homes, lives and communities and we feel that this much-needed improvement scheme is starting to do just that.

“The radical transformation created by the refurbishment is taking shape nicely and promises to deliver better homes now and for future generations to come.”

Work on the tower blocks got underway in January, and is on schedule to finish by about April next year.
