A NEW Friday charter market has launched in Droitwich for an initial three month trial period.

The market, which kicked off on Friday, will be in Victoria Square by the library and Tourist Information Centre, with more stalls in Saltbarrow Market, just off the High Street.

Both areas are linked by the St Andrew's Shopping Centre so there will be lots for visitors to browse and enjoy.

Councillor Bob Brookes, chairman of the Charter Market Sub-Committee, said: "Droitwich Spa Town Council has been looking for ways to encourage trade and make the town a more interesting visitor destination by having a regular weekly market.

"Droitwich was granted a Charter for a market in 1553 but changes in the law over the last 460 years have meant it was not a simple matter to arrange and a great deal of work was needed by councillors and the town clerk to make this possible.

"Droitwich town council will be keeping a close eye on its operation to ensure that all goes smoothly during the trial period.

"I urge residents to come along and enjoy this regular weekly event with the opportunity to support local traders."

The market is operated by Joe Jones, of OnetoOne Events, who overseas many of the local markets in the neighbouring towns and there are special arrangements for local businesses.
