A STATE-OF-THE-ART laboratory studying odours has opened at the University of Worcester.

The Spectrum OdourLab at the university's National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU) was officially opened by vice-chancellor Professor David Green on Thursday, June 19.

The laboratory is run by Spectrum Environmental Ltd - which is based in Checketts Lane, Worcester - will allow for the precise study of odours for the benefit of environmental researchers, food producers and a wide range of other organisations.

Speaking at the opening, which was attended a host of representatives from throughout the area including Worcester MP Robin Walker and the city's controversial new mayor Cllr Alan Amos, Prof Green said he was "very excited" to be opening the new facility, which is able to analyse up to 100 samples a day.

"This is an exciting new venture for us and we really excited about it," he said.

"We can replicate any climate known to humanity."

Spectrum's group managing director Steve Hunt said

"Odour is a very emotive sense," he said.

"Anyone who has dealt with a neighbour who has a bad smell knows that.

"When you open something that's brand new or step into a new car for the first time what's the first thing you notice? It's the smell."

He added the University was an ideal place for the lab to be based as it could benefit from the work of student volunteers, who would also be able to use their work to help them into employment.

NPARU director Professor Roy Kennedy said student volunteers were the ideal people to work at the lab, which is able to operate 24 hours a day.

"Young people have more sensitive noses and that's what we need," he said.
