A UK Athletics coach, and store founder, is helping participants of the Worcester 10K running challenge get ready for the challenge.

Oli Davey, founder of specialist running retailer Runaround Sports which is a sponsor of Worcester City Races, is helping novice runners by coordinating a specialised training group aimed specifically at people who are yet to complete a 10 kilometre run.

The training group, titled Parkrun to 10k, will be offering advice and tips on everything from running techniques, training preparation and footwear.

Mr Davey said: "There are so many physical and mental health benefits to be had from taking part, it’s just that some people don’t know where to start when it comes to training for an event like this.

“That’s where we come in, and we urge anyone who is even slightly interested, regardless of their current ability level, to come to the training groups to see what they can achieve.

“We’ll be focusing on the technique of how to run properly and safely, not just going off for long runs together, and in that sense we’ll be catering for anyone and everyone.”

The programme builds on the highly successful NHS led Couch to 5k plan, with Runaround Sports regularly receiving enquiries from those looking for help and support on how to double that distance.

The weekly classes started Monday, June 16, and will be operating for two, six week blocks leading up to the races at the store.

Details of the weekly Parkrun to 10k training sessions can be obtained from the store, located on Deansway, Worcester, with sessions planned every Monday at 7pm and Friday at 8:30am, suitable for all ages and abilities.

The day long 10 kilometre run, which also features a 50 kilometre cycle challenge titled Run Bike Run, is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, after athletics legend, Steve Cram, chose the city as the venue to launch the event.

Worcester City Young Athletes runs will also take place over a one mile distance for those under the age of 11, and 3 kilometres for athletes aged between 11 and 15 years.
