STUDENTS at Westacre Middle School swapped their uniforms for pyjamas to raise hundreds of pounds for two charitable causes.

Children from the Droitwich school came up with the idea for the unusual non-uniform day, and held the fundraiser on the last day before half term.

A total of £301 was raised for St Richard's Hospice and the British Heart Foundation, while more than 400 items of food were donated to the Droitwich Spa Foodbank.

Foodbank volunteers Debbie Ash and Mary Stanbury collected the donations during the charity day, which was combined with the school's Harvest Festival events.

Paul Barber, deputy headteacher, said: "As a school, we encourage and teach mutual respect and empathy, so we were very impressed to have different groups of children from across school ask about how we could raise money to help others.

"The day itself was a huge success. It was a great example of pupil voice in action as well as being a fun way to end a really busy first half term of the school year.

"More importantly, it seems to have inspired other children around school, who have already been asking their teachers if they can help organise our next charity day for other worthy causes."
