TRAFFIC chaos in Worcester city centre has been caused by a collapsed sewer.

Emergency works are currently being carried out in Britannia Square, off the Tything, by staff from Severn Trent Water.

Investigations revealed the problem extended through to the Tything and traffic management and signage has been put in place by Worcestershire County Council.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, a collapsed sewer was found and Severn Trent Water are currently carrying out emergency works on site.

"Originally it was thought the section of sewer pipe in question ran only underneath Britannia Square but, following further investigation, the damage is more extensive and actually runs through to the Tything.

"Traffic management and signage is in place, along with clear 'no entry' signs warning drivers of the one-way system permanently in operation on that section of Britannia Square.

"We'd urge motorists to observe the law. Not doing so puts drivers and pedestrians at risk.

"County council officers have contacted Severn Trent Water and its traffic management contractor to ask for further advanced signage to be put in place."

So why not suspend the No Entry at the end of Britannia Sq to help the residents of this area who are currently coralled into Love's Grove ?

Better signage warning drivers who 'rat run' in order to avoid Castle Street lights that Britannia Square has no exit except Loves Grove would be a better idea.
