PUPILS at a Worcester school have found wacky and wonderful places in which to read thanks to an extreme reading competition.

Youngsters from Red Hill CE primary school were challenged to turn the pages of their favourite books in unusual places.

Teacher Charlotte Foy, the Midhurst Close school's literacy co-ordinator, said: "I thought it would make quite a nice challenge.

"We all dressed up as book characters for world book day and had a book parade in the afternoon.

"To promote reading across the school I thought it would be good to encourage people to read in extreme places."

Among the entries were winners Alex Gough, in year 6, who hopped into a recycling bin to enjoy his book, and Charlotte Harris, in year 3, who submitted a picture of her reading inside a castle folly.

Other entries included pupils reading while sitting on roofs and inside fridges as well as while out on the Malvern Hills.

However, Miss Foy stressed the pupils were warned they must follow strict safety guidelines about where they dipped into their books.

Miss Foy said: "It was really successful. We did a display of all the pictures.

"We have got a big push on literacy in school in general so we do a lot of competitions along with story writing challenges and the children love having their work published."
