Kempsey is morphing into M5 because of "miserable" motorway night closures

Worcester News: Kempsey is morphing into M5 because of "miserable" motorway night closures Kempsey is morphing into M5 because of "miserable" motorway night closures

SLEEPLESS residents say their village is becoming ‘like the M5’ at night as huge diverted lorries trundle past their homes during a miserable month of motorway night closures.

Villager Nicola Spears is concerned the A38 through Kempsey is becoming a major diversion night route for lorries and cars while work is completed on the M5, and even filmed the disturbance it was causing. However, the Highways Agency says the essential work is being carried out at night to reduce disruption.

Ms Spears said: “The A38 is used as a relief road so close to homes and this is causing misery to residents. It happens all the time. Who will want to move into new homes that are planned with all the traffic misery?”

David Harrison, an independent Malvern Hills district councillor for Kempsey, said: “It’s very noisy during the whole night because the A38 is used as a diversion route. Some repairs have been done to the A38, filling in some of the pot holes to stop some of the noise - but not all of it. It is just the sheer quantity of traffic. The motorway diversion through Kempsey will continue forever and it flares up whenever there is a problem with the M5. It’s all through the night and people along the A38 can’t sleep.”

Cllr Harrison believes it will get worse after plans for 310 new homes in the village were given the go ahead in recent weeks.

He estimates the road is closed at least 12 times a year.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency confirmed that road markings and studs were being replaced on the M5 southbound between junction 7 near Worcester and junction 8 near Tewkesbury from Monday, May 12.

The work, which ends on Thursday, May 22, will be carried out overnight during a full closure of the southbound carriageway between 9.30pm and 5.30am each night with traffic diverted via the A44, A4440, A38 and M50 to rejoin the M5 at junction 8.

He said: “Renewing the road markings and studs will allow road users to clearly identify lane boundaries on the carriageway at all times.

Closing the road will allow the work to be carried out in a much shorter period of time than by keeping the road partially open, minimising the overall disruption.”

Work is also to take place on the northbound carriageway, also resulting in overnight closures between junctions seven and eight for resurfacing which was due to begin last night for two nights from 9pm to 7am. During the work M5 northbound traffic will be diverted through Kempsey via the A38.

Why will adding some more homes increase the diverted traffic form the M5?

I smell a nImbey trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Cllr Harrison is a bumbling idiot who will always jump on the back of some bad news and blame everyone else for the perceived injustice whilst offering no solution or positive contribution. There is no reason why 310 additional homes in Kempsey will cause the amount of traffic diverted from the M5 to get worse, he just wanted to wine about that too.
The truth is the A38 is the natural diversion when the M5 is closed and it will always be so. I notice that he provides no suggestions of how to address his perceived problems, maybe he'd like to transplant Kempsey back into the 19th Century?
Personally, I live in Kemspey and have no issue with the road being used as a diversion, particularly when repairs are being carried out. I am sure that Highways try to minimize the impact of any works.

Yeah, and don't forget that before Kempsey was built, and the A38 constructed, Stone Age man used to sit around camp fires with just the clipclop of animal hooves to bother them.

I knew as soon as they Tarmaced the main road through the village we'd have all and sundry using it to get from A to B.

Bloody modernisation.

Yes they were business people in commercial premises catering for motorists passing through. They are no longer that but residential homes and there are plans for more to be built, so the motorway traffic should not be diverted through homes and schools for 4 weeks! It's not for a few days. We are used to that when there are accidents etc. Highways say it is more cost effective and causes less disruption for motorists! Just a little empathy would be nice as we havent slept properly for a whole week now and can't even have a window open in this heat. My whole house vibrates as unlike motorway speed restrictions they csn thunder through here at 60mph without any speed enforcements.

I have a friend in Severn Stoke and yes they do complain as it's even worse for her as they accelerate to go up the hill right by her house.

The motorwway could be done a lane at a time it is inconsiderate just to save highways agency money.

Yes I can imagine how bad it is in Clifton :-(

The 30mph is never enforced and they really think they can drive like they are still on the motorway.

Monday night was mayhem as we were down to one lane on A38 and the artics were having to snake through a chicane of cones by the Talbot as they were doing emergency repairs to the road until 0130 hrs!! Right under my mum's bedroom window ....lights flashing and reverse bleeping going on.

Makes me laugh though as the police would be knocking on your door if you played loud music past midnight!

Have written to MP to ask why its less disruptive as highways agency says to reroute through Kempsey instead of doing a lane ata a time on motorway?

The motorists and residents certainly don't feel its less disruptive.

I have reported to the Highways Dept their complete inaptitude in this - on Monday 19th they closed the M5 South between 7-8 whilst at the same time the major works to convert the Ketch roundabout on the A38 was also closed for night time work, so not only did we get the noise of the work, we also got hundreds of lorries stacked up stationary, including livestock braying, horns blowing, refridgeration units rattling away, all the way along the A4440. Which numpties planned that one? I too am having sleepless nights in St Peters Worcester.

They only mentioned Kempsey because I sent the video from my bedroom window of how bad it is. Me and my mum are both right on the main road and feel really ill from the lack of sleep it's so unfair. Can't believe someone has decided this is better than closing a lane on the motorway.
