A GROUP of volunteers helping people across Worcestershire living with cancer have been applauded for their work.

As part of this week’s national Volunteer’s Week the county’s Macmillan Buddy Service, which offers practical and emotional support to people in Worcestershire living with cancer as well as family members and carers, has been lauded.

Members offer support including help with shopping, housework or just meeting up for a coffee and a chat.

Judy Waller, one of the group’s leaders, said she had been inspired to get involved in memory of her mother.

“Unfortunately we all seem to know someone who has been affected by cancer,” she said.

“When I met one lady outside her house for the first time I hardly recognised her.

“She said just knowing she was going out for coffee made her feel alive again.

“I will never forget being with her, watching her choose what to drink and which cake to have.

“It made me realise what a fantastic service this was going to be.”

The service is available from 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday.
