FANS of Droitwich comedian Rik Mayall, who died on Monday, are campaigning to get his lost World Cup anthem (video above) to the top of the charts to honour him.

The group on facebook, Rik Mayall 'Noble England' For World Cup No.1, has already attracted more than 6,100 supporters with admin urging them to buy and download the song, or the full EP, to earn him a World Cup number one.

The campaign has been started by Jon Morter, the man behind the X Factor campaign which pushed the typical Christmas chart topper to second place by urging people to buy the rap-rock Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine, and two friends, Jason McGuire and Steve Diamond.

Mr Diamond said it was not about protesting popular music or the official World Cup songs, but instead honouring the 56-year-old Young Ones star and supporting the country's football dream.

He said: "We decided that we wanted to pay tribute to the legend that was Rik Mayall. All three of us are of a certain age where we grew up with The Young One, Blackadder, Bottom, Bad News, etc, and were shocked when we read the news yesterday (Monday).

"What a lot of people don’t know is that Rik released a single for the World Cup in 2010. It was not successful - just like the England team in South Africa. So, we all agreed that we thought the timing would be perfect to get that single back in the charts and up to number one.

"Unlike previous campaigns, this is not a protest against The X-Factor, or anything like that. This is a tribute to the memory of a man who has entertained us for over 30 years. And we’re also showing support for the lads in Brazil at the same time."

After flopping in 2010, Rik's Englishman anthem will this weekend go up against Monty Python's unofficial cup song - a reworking of 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life'.

"There’s not a lot of time, and we will have to make this one of the fastest selling singles of all time, but such is the popularity of Rik Mayall, that we believe that the great British Public will get behind this, and I don’t know a single football fan who has not enjoyed something that Rik Mayall has been in," Mr Diamond added.

Rik died on Monday after a suspected seizure caused by a serious head injury sustained 16 years ago after an accident with a quad bike at his Devonshire farm.
