A CLUB which assists blind and partially-sighted people in and around Malvern is looking for volunteer drivers.

The club, which has been active since the 1950s, is the local branch of Sight Concern Worcestershire.

It is behind the Talking Newspaper, which provides an audio version of the Malvern Gazette every week to people with sight problems.

It also runs a Wednesday club which meets fortnightly at Christchurch Hall, Avenue road, Malvern, and which is highly popular.

Pauline Cooper of the club said: "Members are collected by volunteers who are then entertained and given a home-made tea before being taken home.

"Many members are regular attendees, enabling them to get out, chat, make new friends and swap their talking books."

The club also organises outings, including theatre trips, regular fish-and-chip lunches and shopping trips.

"Some of our regular drivers have had to give up because of age or health, so we're currently looking for new volunteers to help our blind members get to and from the club."

She said the commitment can be flexible, but typically involves collecting people from their homes and taking them to the club, and taking them home later.

The club has about 220 members and is supported by donations, and fundraising activities include regular collections, coffee mornings, an annual garden party and attendance at Malvern's charity Christmas fair.
