A RADIO station serving the two counties has proved to be a hit on the airwaves by scooping a prestigious national award at the annual commercial radio industry 'Oscars'.

Free Radio Herefordshire and Worcestershire were named Station of the Year, for those with a total survey area of under 500,000 people, at the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards in London’s Westminster Bridge Park Plaza Hotel on Thursday.

Free Radio beat off competition from rival stations around the UK, including Global Radio, CFM Radio and Isle of Wight Radio.

The award ceremony, which was hosted by Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell, also featured performances from some of the UKs top artists, including Olly Murs and Ella Eyre.

The awards, now in their 19th year and organised by RadioCentre, are the biggest celebration of commercial radio, marking achievement from presenters and programming to advertising and marketing.
