A WORCESTER vet who mistakenly put a pet dog to sleep has taken a step back from dealing with smaller animals and handed the reigns on.

David Denny has long been the familiar face at DJB Denny veterinary practice even winning the Equine Vet of the Year award nationally in 2010.

But now his colleague Ann Robinson, who has also been with the practice for 22 years, will be taking control of the smaller animal side of the business.

Jo Fitzhugh, practice manager, said: "DJB Denny will continue to practice, he will focus on the larger animals. And Ann has taken over the practice and the smaller animals.

"Mr Denny will front the surgery, which runs 2pm until 3pm and then 5.50pm to 6.30pm, Wednesday and Thursday with Ann taking on the other days."

The move comes after Mr Denny was accused of mistakenly putting down a dog that was only at the vets for some antibiotics.

This case concerning Nick Murphy and his dog Gunner is currently being looked into by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

But Miss Fitzhugh said this was not the reason for the change.

"The wheels have been in motion on this for a while, over 12 months," she said. "It has nothing to do with the incident. That's a matter being dealt with professionally and there are two sides to every story.

"Mr Denny has built up a base with a very loyal client base. It was the 1960s when he started trading. It's always been no-nonsense, traditional veterinary care and these are the values we are taking forward.

"Not everybody can afford full frills at the vets but they still want to provide care for their animal."

The vets, in Henwick Road, is also currently undergoing a huge refurbishment and the practice want to reassure their customers it is still business as usual.

"A lot of our customers have been phoning up because we haven't got a website and with the work going on they are not sure if we are open. But it is business as usual and the new practice should be completed by February. It will be Worcester's first purpose built veterinary centre."

There will never be another Mr Denny he does not charge the earth for his services I have even known him not to charge if he knows people are struggling in the past .
Good luck with this nasty incident I can feel for both concerned it must have put Mr Denny in a situation of worry .

Mr Denny, you are a legend!! We always bring our dog to you and love your no nonscence down to earth attitude. If you charge it's always been £10, not rip of prices like the other vets. We always have a good banter we you and know deep down how you love our animals no matter what size or shape!

Mr Denny's sparkling wit, silver tongued charm, total focus on customer service, respectful attitude and relaxed manner have always impressed me. I really hope that the new team can continue to deliver these behaviours so key to modern day business success.

Good luck to them.

You only have to go into the waiting room to see how many people value Mr Denny and his team's services. I have been taking my two cats there for several years following a recommendation by a local cat breeder (a very particular customer she was too!) and have always been totally happy. My experience with other vets: keeping pets in under observation and doing tests that reveal nothing but cost an arm and a leg. One of them told my insurer that my cat had anorexia, which was utter nonsense, just a fussy eater. The twerps at this vet's didn't bother to tell me anything and then guess what the insurer refused to pay the bill for overnight stay due to so called 'pre-existing condition' that I hadn't mentioned. A complete con going on between vets and insurers if you ask me! I hope Mr Denny goes on for a long while, an honest man among many less dedicated and ethical practitioners.

I have been taking my pets to Mr Denny for 20 years and wouldn't take them anywhere else. He has always been correct with diagnoses and doesn't charge every time especially if you go in and there is nothing wrong with your pets. When he does charge the prices are reasonable not like some vets who charge you £25 just to walk through the door. Please keep going Mr Denny, you at least seem to cater for real animal lovers who may not have a lot of money. There is always a queue of people waiting with their pets to be seen. Thank you for your past services and we will continue to come to your practice.

Whilst I completely acknowledge the very positive reviews for Mr Denny and his generosity with consultation fees etc, I must speak out here for the poor dog and the distraught family who have lost a beloved pet due to a huge blunder at the hands of Mr Denny!
No one seems to be taking this into account!!

Money is an issue for most of us these days, but I'd rather walk away having paid the full fee for the correct treatment and with my pet alive!

Obviously this was a very upsetting situation for the family but as Miss Fitzhugh stated there are two sides to every story.
Having heard Mr Dennys version it has to be said that he acted in the best interest of the animal, as all Vets are required to do. His only mistake was not ensuring that the owners clearly understood that that is what he was going to do.

A friend of mine took her cat there and asked for it to be put down. Needless to say the vet's use of gruff language and too the point attitude ensured Fluff's over confidence was knocked successfully back a peg or too. Thoroughly recommended.

mr denny would never ever turn an animal away if the owner had no money, nor does he chase the fees owed to him.so what if his manner to owners is gruff?he is there for the animals welfare not the owners .quite simply i would not go anywhere else to be charged hundreds of pounds for treatment that is not needed and judging by the queues at the surgery last week there are more animal owners than ever at this caring and popular vets doors.

I will never go anywhere else. I have been taking my dogs there for 20+ years and have never been given any reason to change. Swift and to the point at a fraction of the cost of a cosy 'pet vet' practice.
