POETS who walked to find inspiration in the local area will be the theme of a literary workshop in the Burgage Hall, Church Lane, Ledbury.

Worcester University academics, Ruth Stacey and Anna Stenning both specialise in environmental writing and, at the event, on October 25, from 10am to 1pm, they will encourage people to attempt "walking-based writing" in the style of Robert Macfarlane or Richard Mabey.

The event will include a a walk along the Geopark way, and an exploration of some of the heritage of Ledbury's walking poets.

Edward Thomas visited the Dymock area, prior to the First World War, when a friendship developed with the great American poet, Robert Frost, who was then living at Leddington.

The aim of the event is to build on the heritage of Ledbury as a centre for writers and poets - including Edward Thomas, John Masefield, Thomas Traherne, Piers Plowman, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning - "to encourage new talent and appreciation."
