CONCERNS have been raised about the dangers of an overgrown pavement in Droitwich, which is forcing walkers to step onto a grass verge.

Rich Benson has raised concerns around the footpath in Ombersley Way, saying it has become overgrown with bushes, forcing walkers to step onto a sloping grass verge next to it.

He has reported the problem to Wychavon District Council, which passed it to Worcestershire County Council which has now pledged to investigate.

Mr Benson was particularly concerned his mother, who lives in town and uses the path on a daily basis, was being put at risk of falling and hurting herself, especially during wet weather when the grass is slippy.

“Mum is 66 and has previously fallen during the winter and broken her arm – not on that pavement, but one further towards town whilst walking to work early one winter morning,” he said.

“I don't want that happening again so having clear pathways will ensure people can walk or use wheel or pushchairs safely without having to risk slipping on mud, or walking in the road.

“She is retired now, but still walks to town regularly for shopping or the doctors.

“Buses often let her down so has no choice but to the battle the jungle.

“Her neighbour is wheelchair bound, and there are plenty of other elderly and non-elderly residents that need that pavement.”

Mr Benson added his mother had reported the issue to Wychavon District Council, but had been told nothing would be done unless 20 people reported the same problem, which he described as “not good enough”.

“Neighbours have got into trouble for chopping the bushes back and using weed control.

“That means that the council won’t do it, and the public are not allowed to either.

“Mum reported it last week, so we are waiting to see what happens.

“I have a feeling an injury claim may be on the cards sooner rather than later, either from a broken bone or an injury caused by the bushes – or both.”

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: “We have arranged for one of our highways inspectors to assess the footpath and the county council will take any necessary action”.
