WORCESTER residents have been showing their support for the Big Walk event which is celebrating community initiatives across the country.

The Big Walk is a nationwide initiative which sees five teams of walkers set off from Batley, in West Yorkshire, to return to their homes across the country, visiting community projects on the way this month, to finish in time for the Great Get Together - an event inspired by former MP Jo Cox who was tragically killed last year.

Jane Knight and Judy Thorn, with support from Jackie Davis, are on the Cornwall leg that is travelling through Worcestershire.

The walk was originally thought up by the Eden Project and is being funded by the National Lottery, and along the way National Lottery supported projects are being visited.

On Monday the team were at the King George V Community Hub to visit the Worcester Community Trust, before moving on to Malvern Community Action today.

Residents came out and clapped and cheered when the team arrived outside the community centre on Monday afternoon.

The team met Worcester Mayor Steve MacKay, Helen Scarret, chief executive of the trust and Tracey Docherty of the DAWN Project, a women's domestic abuse charity.

James Lindley, part of the team supporting the walkers, said: "It is really inspiring seeing all the community projects.

"We were also in Birmingham on Sunday night seeing a homeless charity and their great work."

Peter Stewart, Eden Project's executive director, said: “The Great Big Walk is an incredible project that will shine a light on the ordinary people all over the UK doing extraordinary things for their community.

"Whether coming together in celebration or in solidarity, in times like these the importance of community unity is greater than ever before.

"This project will share the positive impact that people coming together can have.”
