I was there from '72 till '79. The happiest school years.
I can't imagine a better school. John Appleton was an exceptional teacher. Fond memories of the annual bonfire night on the field at the back of the school. Football on the farmer's field before the school bought some of it. The dinner ladies who organised playground activities "Mrs Limerick's tag". The den behind the sports equipment shed. Daniel Treen falling into the goldfish pond (about 10 inches deep). Swimming at the RNIB pool on Monday's. Picking elderberries down Church Lane and Walker's Lane to make wine. Keith Waldron and his skateboard exhibition. The bike shed. Warm 1/3 pint milk bottles at first break. The massive "Delta" maths books. Who had the biggest pencil case (till people started bringing in tool boxes and the like).
Lovely days in a lovely surrounding. Safe and happy, and that was largely down to the leadership of John Appleton. He used to umpire for Crowle CC and carried on playing soccer for years.

He also was my headmaster at Whittington, I was lucky to see him retire, he kept coming back to play football with the children, top man and great teacher.

John Appleton was a lovely man and wonderful teacher. He knew all the strengths and weaknesses of all his pupils and always brought the best out of them. He taught both our children and became a long term friend and always remained interested in their lives. He will be sadly missed by many people.

Well so sad to hear John has now passed away. He was my Headmaster at Whittington and when ever I saw him years after leaving school he always came over and spoke. He was an absolute gentleman, a great teacher and always had a smile for you. RIP John xxx
