Halesowen Chess Club held an Awards Night on June 30.
Halesowen Chess Club
Guests of Honour were Madeline, Ross and Helen Beasley respectively widow, son and daughter-in-law of former member Reg Beasley who passed away in 2008.
Reg's family have donated a trophy, in the form of a splendid chess board and set, to be competed for annually.
In Reg's final season 2007-8 he scored a higher percentage than any other player in the club (at the age of 80!) and to honour that performance it was decided to awarded the trophy to whoever scored the highest in each subsequent league season.
Jon Asbury was the inaugural winner with a superb score of 10 wins, 11 draws and no losses, for a score of 74%. Malcolm Hunt was runner up with Dale Jackson a close third.
The Kevin Ryder prize is awarded to the best team performance in the year and this year this was won by Halesowen's third team, who won their division of the Dudley League with 4 won matches, 2 draws and no losses.
Individuals scoring well for the team included John Southcote with 5/6, Derek Digger 3.5/4 and team captain Joyce Evans with 3/4.
The annual prize for the Quickest win was won by Mike Hadley. Not content with winning in 14 moves in March against Worcester City, he went won better and won in 13 moves against Stourbridge in April!
The first picture shows the presentation party and winners, from left to right Ross Beasley, Helen Beasley, Madeline Beasley, Jon Asbury, Joyce Evans and Mike Hadley.
The second shows the first ever game played with the Reg Beasley board and set between Ross Beasley and club member Dayl Martin, with Helen and Madeline and other club members looking on.
