FOOTBALL.
Bromyard Town 1, Lye Town 4.
BROMYARD Town failed to pick up from last season’s fine end-of-season run and suffered a disappointing home defeat by Lye Town in their opening West Midlands League Premier Division clash.
Despite an entertaining end-to-end first-half, the visitors went in with a two-goal advantage with goals from Adam Bastable on the half hour and Ashley Greenaway seven minutes later.
When Damian Whitcombe netted Lye’s third from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second-half it was clear that Bromyard’s new signings will take time to gel.
Greenaway added his second after 70 minutes, before Joe Wood scored Bromyard’s consolation goal six minutes later, running onto a Wes Joyce flick-on.
MALVERN MONDAY LEISURE LEAGUE.
LEADERS Drunken Dynamos saw their lead in the Malvern five-a-side league cut to just one point as they were beaten 8-4 by The ‘B’ Team.
Bottom side Ajax Trees Down won well, picking up their first points of the campaign, Anne-Marie Bartlett starring as they eased out Malvern Mavericks 10-7. The Beach Boys beat Real Madras 9-7.
GOLF.
BRANSFORD CLUB.
ONE of the major competitions in the Bransford Seniors calendar, the Cyril Lee Trophy, once again proved what a popular event it is by attracting a sizeable entry list of over 40.
Played in good conditions it was the seniors captain, Mike Davidge, who showed the way home.
Playing off a handicap of 16 he amassed a total of 42 points, two more than runner-up Robin Young, who was playing off 21 and both players duly saw their handicaps come down by another stroke.
Third spot went to John Phillips (on 39), while other leading scores were Richard Walker (38), Jeff Thomas, Ray Loughrey, Paul Edlin, Tony Hardiman and Ferey Ghani (all 37), and June Atkinson and Ken Jones (both 36).
Tony Robinson was in outstanding form in the seniors August Medal and finished a comfortable five strokes ahead of his rivals in Division One.
He had a gross score of 84 for a nett 69, with Richard Walker (91-17-74) and Harry Godwin (87-13-74) his nearest challengers. Other leading scores in Division One were Trevor Atkinson (86-11-75), Dave Lumsden (91-14-77) and Jeff Thomas (89-12-77).
Leading the way in Division Two were Robin Walker (97-27-70) and Pauline Wetton (92-22-70).
Other leading scores were Ray Loughrey (98-26-72), Robin Young (94-21-73), Brian Caulfield (93-20-73) and Alan Wallcroft (98-24-74).
Away from the seniors, the club held its annual golfer/non-golfer nine-hole fun competition which was won by the mother and daughter pairing of Sally and Catherine McPherson.
Runners-up were father and daughter Stu and Hannah Wood with Lesley Lammas and Karl Richards third.
Prizes were also presented to non-golfers with the least amount of putts according to age and these went to Mathew and Christopher Paige (under six years), Josh Bourne (seven to 10 years) and Kurtis Bolton (11-16 years). On what was a busy weekend for the club a mixed match at Tewkesbury Park produced a closely-contested affair that appropriately ended all-square on 3½ each.
This was followed by an enjoyable Texas Scramble at Bransford on the Sunday which was won by Andy Lammas, Graham Wallace, Maks Wyard and Greg Anthony.
RUGBY UNION.
UPTON CLUB.
UPTON-upon-Severn Junior RFC are about to begin the 2010-2011 season with 130 junior members (girls and boys) ranging from five to 16 years of age.
They also have a 20-strong coaching contingent all of whom are levels one or two-qualified coaches, seven qualified referees operating within the junior section.
Over the last year, Upton has been working hard behind the scenes to earn the RFU-quality accreditation ‘Seal of Approval’ which lays out a comprehensive series of best practices, procedures, disciplines, targets and qualifications.
This aims to ensure that the rugby experience youngsters will get when they join the club will be both enjoyable and memorable and the coaching they will get will be of a standard desired and recognised by the RFU. For Upton, this has been quite a challenge for a small club that is embarking upon only its fifth season. The club feel it is well worth the effort because it is the ultimate recognition of the club’s commitment to the continued development and growth of junior rugby.
The RFU seal of approval will be officially awarded to Upton-upon-Severn Juniors next month at the start of the new season.
Upton hope to attract and recruit new players into their key age groups, from u7s to u12s.
A recruitment drive will be held at Upton Rugby Club from 10.30am on Sundays, September 5 and 12.
TENNIS.
