Vale MP launches new minibus scheme

EVESHAM’S MP, Peter Luff, had the honour of opening the town’s new community minibus scheme during the launch at Hampton Ferry.

The scheme will allow disabled people, and those from charitable groups and organisations who might otherwise have difficulty getting out and about, to do so with ease.

It has been made possible thanks to generous grants from Wychavon District Council, Evesham Town Council, All Saints Church, the Methodist Church and John Martin’s Charity, and is a continuation of the popular Open House scheme started by Evesham town councillor Diana Raphael’s sister, Deidre, in the 1980s.

Diana said: “The launch was absolutely wonderful and there were about 70 people there from various organisations, charities and churches. The Open House scheme folded just before Christmas and was looking to sell the minibus, so we looked at ways of fundraising to buy it.”

Coun Reg Jakeman, and his wife Lynne, added: “It was important the scheme wasn’t allowed to disappear. It has been going for many years and does so much good in the area for those less privileged.”

The 16-seater bus, which has wheelchair access, is now up and running and volunteer drivers are being sought.

The vicar of Evesham, the Revd Andrew Spurr, was at the launch last Tuesday.

He said: “These straightened times have helped us to rediscover the funds of good will that communities can draw on when they can see the end-result in their midst.

“Councillors Raphael and Jakeman are to be commended for seizing the moment and taking steps to ensure that the bus remains available to organisations and voluntary groups in Evesham.”

Mr Luff said he was delighted the scheme was able to remain in use, “it’s all down to local people” he said.
