This weekend saw the arrival of a much awaited event in my calendar – the start of the Grand Prix season with the Australian Grand Prix, and what a start it was!
Although I didn’t actually see the race in it’s entirety I was thrilled to see that the Ferrari driven by Kimi Raikkonen was unrivalled against the McLaren’s and also by the
Renault’s (who dominated last season with a Championship win by Fernando Alonso). Alonson came in second, and the surprising twist in this race was the fact that Lewis Hamilton, a relative
unknown taken on by Ron Dennis for McLaren, came in third place in his first ever F1 race and took it by storm. I can’t remember seeing such a dramatic first entrance by a driver before!
It is definitely an odd season so far without Michael Schumacher, who retired from Formula 1 last year. Having said that it looks like there will be a good battle between the McLaren’s, the
Ferrari’s and the Renault’s. I will make sure I watch all the other races this season if possible!
The reason I did not see today’s race was the Conservative Spring Forum in Nottingham. This was a very interesting event, also with a bit of controversy when it transpired that David Cameron
used a private jet to travel from his Constituency in Whitney in Oxfordshire to Herefordshire, only a 90 minute journey if that. He said though that all his flights are “carbon offset”,
which is fair enough considering what he has said about introducing taxes to combat global warming.
William Hague was also very interesting (although his hairline seems to recede more and more with each public appearance) as was Andrew Lansley and Caroline Spelman. More about the conference can be
found on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6461847.stm
Other than that it has been a very busy week. I am gearing up for the local elections now and everything is going well. This time next Sunday I shall be in Tunisia for a much needed holiday; the
prospect of which is looking more and more appealing given the fact that the winds outside are horrendous and snow is forecast in the next day or two.
Hopefully I will write another entry before departing to warmer climes!
