ONE afternoon this week I was travelling on the back lanes of Malvern when I came upon a cricket match.
Now this is in September, Tuesday afternoon, and my attention was drawn, so I nipped in and it was in fact a county game, between the over-60s of Worcestershire and Yorkshire.
As you would guess, many of those present were contempories of mine, people with whom I had the pleasure of playing for and against, although it has to be said that they all, with one or two exceptions, looked a lot older than me.
We sat and reminisced on games and people gone by and spent an enjoyable half an hour before I had to returned to Bradley Towers for dinner as the cook and the butler like to serve on time.
It did strike me, though, that when I was a nipper, it would have been unheard of to have a county cricket game for over-60s. My dad did play when he was 60 but to have an organised game for oldies would have been unthinkable.
Much credit to John Reynolds, who in this area founded the Fossils. They played a few odd games to start with and now play every week, every day if they can and go on two tours each summer.
I was asked if I was available for the odd game but suggested that someone has to run the country while they all play cricket.
It’s the last weekend of the season for the Worcestershire boys and as I write, it looks like promotion in the four-day game with a play-off in Cardiff on Sunday in the Pro-40. Let’s hope it’s dry for the weekend.
Cardiff is one of my favourite cities, especially on international rugby day. It has a great buzz about the place.
It has been very hectic of late so we are off for a few days next week. It’s supposed to be one of those quiet re-charge your batteries holidays, although I suspect that may not happen.
Does it take you a long time to get into holiday mode? It seems to take me about three days to relax and get into a different timescale, by which time it’s almost time to go back to work.
It seems that only last week it was light when I got up. A week later, it’s pitch black. Have we had autumn yet or did I miss it?
I had a day off this week, so I had a treat with the whole family, grandson Joshua George as well.
We went to... the cricket, at Kidderminster. Well, he wanted to go, and now he’s more than 18 months old he does know his own mind, and he has not been brainwashed at all.
See, a whole week’s column and not a mention of the great win at Wasps on Sunday, although...
Tigers at Sixways tomorrow, always a bit tasty, and then cricket on Sunday. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness indeed.
