ONE of Worcester's best known and longest established estate agents is closing down.

Griffiths and Charles in Foregate Street, which can trace its roots back to the foundation of land agents Arthur G Griffiths in 1870, has shut its doors to new business. Although it is continuing the administration of on-going sales and its antiques and collectables auction in Drakes Broughton village hall, near Pershore on Saturday, April 18 will go ahead as planned.

"The situation is that the lease on our premises in Worcester ends this year and I have been looking to wind down to retire," said Mr Robinson. "In preparation I sold the rental department off a year ago and at my age I just haven't got the energy to throw into a new venture. However, the business is not closing immediately. We will continue to see existing property deals through and the collectables sale on April 18 will be held as usual."

The firm's closure will mean four full time and two part time staff out of work.

"They are really quality people and have a vast amount of experience, which I am sure other estate agents in the city will find very useful," Mr Robinson added.

The 62-years-old first came to Worcester in 1981 to join auctioneers and estate agents Arthur G. Griffiths and Sons following the retirement of auctioneer Calvin Chapman. He later became a partner and when that businesses was dissolved in 1987, set up estate agents Griffiths and Co from the same premises in partnership with Ian Winnard. When Mr Winnard retired in 2000, Mr Robinson continued on his own under the name Griffiths and Charles.

A keen sportsman, Mr Robinson intends to remained based in the Worcester area and continue playing for Worcestershire Over 60s cricket team.
