BRIAN Salisbury was bowled over when he was given the opportunity to train for his dream job as a cricket groundsman.

Keen cricketer Mr Salisbury, had been out of work for almost two years before he asked for advice from Worcester-based Per-temps People Development Group (PPDG).

He had been doing some voluntary work with Kempsey Cricket Club – he also plays for the side – and told employment coach Trevor Rhead about his desire for a new career in groundsmanship.

Mr Rhead arranged for the 57-year-old to be placed on a 13-week New Deal scheme with the cricket club in Kempsey, near Worcester, and he also studied for an English Cricket Board level one certificate in groundsmanship.

Mr Salisbury said: “Following the experience I’ve gained on the placement I will be taking my level two in October. This will enable me to work at any ground worldwide and I will also become a member of the Institute of Groundsmanship.

“I’ve obtained full-time employment as an electrician’s assistant, which starts in the next couple of weeks, but I’m determined to become a full-time groundsman. The experience I have gained on the programme has been a big help as will be the level two qualification, if I can pass it.”

Maurice Smith, Kempsey Cricket Club chairman and former head groundsman, was full of praise for the hours Mr Salisbury has toiled keeping the square and the outfield immaculate.

He said: “He has worked hard. We’ve got three senior teams and six junior teams.

“Brian has been preparing all the wickets and outfields.

“Most of the time there is something on every day and a great deal of Brian’s work has to be done at weekends and evenings.”

Mr Rhead is pleased that Mr Salisbury has found full-time employment and received training to fulfil his employment goals.

He said: “Brian, although being clear in his long-term ambitions, has found the support given to him by PPDG extremely useful both from a practical perspective and as a friendly ear to talk over his progress during the time he has spent with us.”
