TWO young professionals with Worcestershire construction giant Thomas Vale have been recognised as among the best in the construction industry.

Matt Graham, an undergraduate quantity surveyor from Drakes Broughton, near Worcester, and Will Cham-bers, an undergraduate in construction management from Kidderminster, both reached the short list of 50 for the Duke of Gloucester Young Achievers Scheme.

The awards aim to identify and celebrate the success of young people in the construction industry.

The pair are employed by the Stourport on Seven-based company which is currently undertaking £250 million worth of work in partnership with major private and public sector clients across the Midlands.

Mr Graham, aged 23, said: “To be nominated by my seniors within the business was humbling. I was exceptionally proud to be able to represent both the company and young people within the industry at the awards on the evening.

“These kinds of awards demonstrate that the traditional image of construction is changing and I want to ensure that young people are offered the same opportunities that I have been given to work with some of the best people in the construction sector.”

Mr Chambers, 25, said: “I was excited to be able to attend these awards alongside my colleagues to highlight that construction is accessible for all young people, regardless of your abilities or background.

“To have been short listed from hundreds of applicants from across the country is a fantastic opportunity and I hope that future generations of young people from across the Midlands are given the opportunity to be excited about the built environment.”

Although neither won the ultimate prize, Tony Hyde, Thomas Vale group managing director, said: “The commitment that these young people have demonstrated to their professional duties has been outstanding.

“As a business, we are very proud of all of our young people and undergraduates and hope to continue to train and develop some of the brightest young stars in the sector.”
