TWO young professionals with Worcestershire construction giant Thomas Vale have been recognised as among the best in the industry.

Matt Graham, an undergraduate quantity surveyor, of Drakes Broughton, near Worcester, and Will Chambers, of Kidderminster, an undergraduate in construction management, both reached the shortlist of 50 for the Duke of Gloucester Young Achievers Scheme, which celebrates the success of young people in construction.

The pair are employed by the Stourport-based company, which is currently undertaking £250 million of work in partnership with major private and public sector clients across the Midlands. Mr Graham, aged 23, said: “To be nominated by my seniors within the business was humbling. I was exceptionally proud to be able to represent both the company and young people within the industry.

“These kinds of awards demonstrate that the traditional image of construction is changing. I want to ensure that young people are offered the same opportunities I have been given and work with some of the best people in the sector.”

Mr Chambers, 25, said: “I was excited to be able to attend these awards alongside my colleagues to highlight that construction is accessible for all young people, regardless of your abilities or background.

“To have been shortlisted from hundreds of applicants across the country is a fantastic opportunity. I hope that future generations of young people from across the Midlands are given the opportunity to be excited about the built environment.”

Although neither won the ultimate prize, Tony Hyde, Thomas Vale group managing director, said: “The commitment that these young people have demonstrated to their professional duties has been outstanding.

“As a business, we are very proud of all of our young people and undergraduates and hope to continue to train and develop some of the brightest young stars in the sector.”
