This school is the business

A NEW school offering students practical experience and employability skills could open in Evesham next year.

Plans unveiled by South Worcestershire College would see the new studio school open in September 2013.

The South Worcestershire School of Enterprise would provide a fast-track route into employment and a strong foundation for a successful career in business for 300 students aged between 13 and 18 from across the Vale.

Set to be located at the Evesham campus, Davies Road, the school will place the students’ learning in the real world and develop the skills they need to succeed as the business leaders of the future.

Pupils will be offered work experience, vocational training, personal coaching and the chance to take part in entrepreneurial activities alongside core GCSEs such as maths, English and science. The sixth form will focus specifically on students becoming independent business people and young entrepreneurs. Students will take an extended national diploma in business studies while establishing their own small business for profit.

Michael O’Brien, the principal at South Worcestershire College, said: “The studio school would give the young people a set of skills that make them more employable.

“Young people will gain the key skills and attributes that local businesses have said they require. We are very focused on two things which have been inspiring to me as head of the college.

“Firstly, the capacity is capped at 300, which keeps it small and personal for the pupils. The second thing is it provides employability skills for the students. We need our local employers as partners to develop our young people.

“I am hoping for a positive response at the open evening. For some young people this is what will help them achieve. If it gets approval it will be a really exciting addition to the schooling in our area.”

Parents, young people and business leaders are being invited to the open evening at the Evesham campus on Wednesday, February 15, where the future of the new school will be discussed further. For more information visit enterprise.sworcs.ac.uk

Im currently attending this college and personally think this is an outragous idea , for the following reasons , one we already struggle for space in the eating areas around college so were are these extra "300 school students going to go ? " ; next being the college has no money ' suposidly ' so being able to find the money for the selected amout of qualified teachers for all these new subjects wich are to take place is near impossible . Not only teachers but the facilities to teach these subjects , becuase as far as im aware it does cost to have science labs built ? Aswell school children = supervision at brake time and lunchtimes needed also better security around the college as they wont be allowed to the shops ? And im almost certain we dont have a playground for these school children to be supervised on . But seriously are 13 year olds really mature enough to be at a college with young adults and disabled people from my experience clearly not ! more important do the adults who pay alot of money for courses be back tracked and feel like school children personally not ? these are only very few points , so consideration really do need to be gone over coz lets face it the the motor viechle workshops arent even up to scrathch yet and cars seem to being exititing quicker then entering the campus . so why not spend the money on things that havent been finished yet !!!!
