A horse rider died and another was seriously injured after two separate equestrian accidents in Worcestershire.

Jo-Anne Williams suffered a serious head injury and later died from her injuries after her horse fell on Sapey cross country course near Bromyard at around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Williams, aged 34, was at fence eight on the novice course - believed to be the water jump - when her horse Shannandoah, a 14-year-old dark bay gelding, fell.

Mrs Williams, of Llanfaethlu, Holyhead, Anglesey in Wales was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital where she later died. The horse was uninjured.

Alex Fox, chairman of British Eventing, which was running the one-day event, said it was with deepest regret that he had to make the announcement.

"On behalf of the whole sport, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Jo-Anne's family," he said.

"The thoughts and prayers of eventing people all over the country are with them at this sad time."

In a separate accident, a 24-year-old woman was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital with a severe spinal injury after falling from her horse at Manor Farm Livery Yard, St John's Road, Stourport-on-Severn at 6.50pm on Tuesday.

The yard declined to comment on the accident.

Terrible news for these people and their families and i hope they get through it all okay.Horses are the main cause of road accidents on public roads and no-one should trust them when riding.Horses need to be banned in public places and events and riders restricted further at horse rider meetings.Might sound bad but they are only animals and are dangerous on the roads.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family concerned and wish the other unfortunate lady a speedy recovery.
If more of the morons that zoomed around in cars causing untold havoc spent more time caring for animals or enjoying a hobby of some kind the world would be a safer place. To say that horses should be banned on the roads and in public places is utter stupidety and Realsim fom Worcester is living proof.

i am utterly dissapointed by the argument going on above. surly this is not the way to show sympathy to the poor family that have lost a mother, wife and daughter? my deepest sympathy goes out to the family of jo-annes and i hope her memory lives on for ever-no one deserves to die but at least it was doing something she enjoyed. it was an accident and no one can be blamed, but for the family i offer all my sympathy.
also the fence it occoured at was infact a chair not the water element.

Thoughts go out to Jo-anne's family and friends for their loss and wishes for a full recovery of the other lady.

Horse accidents on roads normally only happen when you get impatient drivers either driving too close when overtaking or driving to fast, which can be the cause of an accident that involves horses. I ride my horse regularly and we have to do road work as there are very little bridleways that can be used and I have experienced on several occassions impatient drivers goint past me either too close or actually just driving to fast. A few weeks ago a car was coming towards me and my friend and we slowed the car down behind us as it was around a corner and the person behind still decided to go past us only leaving inches between his vehicle and the horses and to top it all, it was someone teaching a person to drive!

For goodness sake, you lot will moan at anything, even when someone poor sole has lost their life, you should be ashamed of yourselves. My condolences to the family and friends of Jo and I wish the other lady a speedy recovery!!! Oh and just for those that are more concerned about horses causing accidents on the roads, well for a start these horses were not on the road, secondly, if you approach a horse you should be slowing right down, switching any loud music off and take care while overtaking not to frighten the horse while being extra vigilent and thirdly you lot need to retake your driving tests, I think you will find that the main cause of accidents these days is the driver them selves, you got people flying around above the limits, driving too close up someones arse, then you dont even know that if you cross someones path on a crossroads its the oncoming traffics right of way, also you are taught on your driving lessons and test about awareness and how to be a cautious and careful driver, if everyone woulf be a little more aware, stick to the law and road rules then accidents would become a little less!!

We are always hearing in thhe news about the injuries sustained in riding accidents. Alot of these injuries seem to be spinal. Maybe a new item of safety gear should be introduced to help reduce the risk of spinal injuries in the future. I think there may be something similar to this being used in motorbike racing.

with ref to comments horses shouldnt be on the roads, are you people horse riders at all? i have no choice but to ride on busy roads to get any where safe enough to ride out thankfully my cob is absolutely brill in the heaviest of traffic its usually the younger boy racers that ars the problem racing 50+ miles in a 30 mile speed zone but there are some considerate drivers and when they do use commone sense and slow down or turn music down i always acknowledge them with a nod or smile and next time if our paths should cross they ll do the same i also wear hi-vis tabbard and that does make a difference. and just for the record my horse is insured so i can ride on the roads and believe it or not it costs a lot more than your car tax, just be more cautious when approaching a horse and rider, yes anything can happen and horses DONT DENT, THEY OFTEN DIE IN A ROAD ACCIDENT! my thoughts are with the riders family who lost her life .

Perhaps they could be restricted to safari parks where people interested would still be able to view them

My condolences and heartfelt sympathy goes out to Joannes family and friends, and although I agree that this is not the place to rant I would like to say that car drivers (which I am one) and motorcyclists (again which I am one) are the main cause of accidents on the roads not horses or their riders. I have had cars/bikes beeping their horns, revving their engines and driving too close to me and my horse and I have also had mindless idiots throwing things from their cars at my horse just to get a reaction. Please show consideration to all road users not those which are motorised and then the roads would be a safer place.
