A PILOT and passenger had a lucky escape when their plane overturned as it landed in Worcestershire.

The plane landed at Defford Airfield, near Worcester, at 2.30pm on Saturday and flipped over after the front wheel dug into the ground.

The duo, who are thought to be father and son, managed to scramble out of the plane without any help.

The incident happened at Defford Air Day, which took place at the airfield in order to raise money for charity.

A land ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and the Warwickshire and Northants Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The crews were told that the light aircraft had been coming in to land at the airshow that was taking place, when it is believed the front wheel dug into the ground at slow speed and the plane flipped onto its back.

"The pilot and his passenger, who are believed to be father and son, managed to get out of the plane unaided.

"The doctor on the helicopter was unable to rule out any spinal injuries. The father, who was 56 and from Tamworth, was taken by land ambulance to Worcester Royal Hospital for an x-ray to his shoulder. The younger man did not need to go."

Money raised from the event, which showcased a range of vintage and modern aircrafts, will go to the Air Ambulance and Mission Aviation Fellowship.

Clive Porter, from Defford Airfield, declined to comment on the crash but did say the event was "extremely" successful.
