Benefit cheat cop went into hiding - court
A FORMER police officer from Worcester has admitted a £22,000 benefits fraud.
Christopher Janes went on the run for three years before he was finally arrested at his last home in Devon.
At Worcester Crown Court prosecutor Kevin Saunders said 56-year-old Janes "got wind" of warrants out for his arrest and constantly moved house to avoid detection.
Janes, formerly of Damaskfield, Warndon Villages, admitted six counts of false accounting between December 1996 and May 2001.
The charges specify that he falsified benefit forms worth £22,390 when his wife was working as a teaching assistant. The couple are now divorced.
Judge Alistair McCreath remanded Janes into custody for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
His case will be dealt with in the week beginning Monday, April 21.
The court heard in 2005 Janes failed to appear before city magistrates while on bail.
He was caught on February 18 this year after police liaised with the Department of Work and Pensions, the government department which brought the prosecution.
The defendant, who had worked for Scotland Yard and the Irish Embassy, was born Gumbrell but changed his name by deed poll to Janes six years ago.
His last known address was in Staplake Road, Starcross, Exeter, but he had also lived in Torquay and Bodmin.
