DISTANT HORIZONS: Atwell International's director and general manager Russell Walker, left, with UK Trade & Investment international trade adviser Paul Thompson
DISTANT HORIZONS: Atwell International's director and general manager Russell Walker, left, with UK Trade & Investment international trade adviser Paul Thompson

A WORCESTER company specialising in lift safety equipment is winning new business in countries as diverse as China and Australia, with help from UK Trade & Investment.

Atwell International, off Ball Mill Top Business Park, Hallow, designs, manufactures and supplies safety products for the lift industry. Established in 1996, it has five full-time and two part-time employees and an annual turnover of about £2m.

The company has been working with UK Trade & Investment for about five years to develop its export business.

It recently won two major contracts after showcasing at the industry's premier international exhibition in Germany, with financial support from UK Trade & Investment's Tradeshow Access Programme.

Director and general manager Russell Walker said: "We have just completed a major project worth £80,000 for Shenzen Airport in China as part of the country's building for the Beijing Olympics.

"The work involved designing and manufacturing a downward acting safety gear. We were one of only two companies in the world that could fulfil these requirements.

"We have also just finalised a £180,000 contract with Victoria Housing Authority in Melbourne Australia to supply our new bi-directional rope brake equipment for 44 high-rise blocks of flats."

He added: "Our international trade adviser, Paul Thompson, has been brilliant."

Mr Thompson, based at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, added: "Atwell's determination, supported by UK Trade & Investment assistance, has reaped rich rewards."
