Rugby club's £8m extension will go ahead

An artist's impression of how the new ground will look.

DELIGHTED Worcester Wariors bosses have welcomed the news that their ambitious plans for an £8m extension to their Sixways ground can go ahead.

An extension to the east stand, which will allow nearly 2,000 extra rugby fans to watch the team play at the stadium, was given the go-ahead by Wychavon district councillors yesterday.

Worcester rugby football club officials believe the move - coupled with the work already underway on a replacement North Stand, Esporta health and racquets club and car park - will help put the club on the map.

Chairman Cecil Duckworth said: "We're delighted that the plans have been accepted by the local authority as it will take our facilities a quantum leap forward. The plan is for work to start very soon with the new extended stand in place for the beginning of next season.

"The new East Stand will house 6,000 Warriors supporters and the noise and atmosphere will be electric."

General manager Charlie Little added: "These plans are essential to our continued development as a club and business and, alongside planning permission for the North Stand, which we already have, will allow us to grow the capacity at Sixways at the appropriate time to above 15,000.

"We are turning Sixways into a fantastic rugby stadium and conferencing facility that everybody connected with the city and Midlands should be proud of."

The new East Stand, which could be started as early as the end of April, will back onto the Esporta site and will boast a state-of-the-art cantilever roof with no support pillars and no restricted views. The plans also include 120m of new pitch-side hospitality with corporate boxes, lounges and function rooms, balconies and bars, a pitch-view restaurant and a new business club.

At a meeting of the council's planning committee, councillors approved the plan, although Coun Anna Mackison queried the extra traffic.

She said: "I read this and it said to me they want 2,000 more in up to a certain rate and maybe more after that to fit in with rugby regulations.

"That says to me another 1,000 vehicles on that roundabout on match days."

However, head of planning Gill Collin said extensive access and roadway works were already in motion following approval of the club's previous plans.

Good news. Just a shame that these people aren't involved with sorting the new football stadium for Worcester City. If they were then the faithful city would have rugby, cricket AND football clubs to be proud of.
