Worcester’s ghosts and ghouls are on television

11:04am Monday 23rd October 2006

A BLIND monk, a buried child and a murdering Satanist are just some of the ghosts that have been haunting our city, according to a paranormal television programme broadcast tomorrow.

The Worcester News reported in May that Derek Acorah, one of Britain's most renowned spirit mediums, was filming in Worcester for the third series of his show, Ghost Towns. The series follows Mr Acorah and presenters Rhodri Owen and Myleene Klass, formerly of reality pop group Hear'Say, around eight different haunted locations to meet the spirits of Britain.

Samantha Coley, stylist at Classic Cuts in Friar Street, said that prior to filming, members of staff had noticed strange things happening at the hairdresser.

She said: "Little things kept going missing when you knew where you had put it. When they were filming we had to stay outside but Mr Acorah said he got in contact with two ghosts. One of them was a blind monk or priest who was supposed to have been tortured in the courtyard. The other was a child meant to have been buried downstairs."

The show also visits Andy Cole, manager of the Pen Connection in Friar Street, who has experienced a lot of paranormal activity since he moved into the premises in 2002. He said: "Derek supposedly found two evil spirits. He got taken over in our staff room. He was shouting and bawling and threw a dehumidifier across the room."

Mr Acorah and his team also uncover a sinister presence at the Worcester Porcelain Museum, while the programme is also set to feature a visit to a property in St John's believed to be 300 years old.

Rebecca Kelly, of Bransford Road, told the Worcester News in May about the night she opened her door to find the ghost-hunting team on her front doorstep. She said: "Derek told me he was driving along and insisted the film crew stop as he got a feeling about our house."

The visit found there to be the spirit of a lady who used to live in the property and who would watch Mrs Kelly cook.

The Worcester episode of Derek Acorah's Ghost Town's will be shown on Tuesday (24) at 9pm on LIVINGtv.
