A SCHOOL has proved its eco credentials by starting to generate its own electricity using solar power.

Sedgeberrow CE First School has installed 40 panels in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.

The solar scheme is part of Worcestershire County Council's 'spend-to-save' project and builds on Sedgeberrow's status as an eco-school and Green Flag holder.

The energy saved and feed in tariff income generated by the panels amounts to around £2,198 a year, with the panels paying for themselves in six years.

Teachers can use the scheme to educate pupils about issues such as climate change, and integrate the learning into subjects such as maths and science.

Head teacher Michele Humphreys said: "The children are all very excited to have a renewable source of energy after extensive learning about non-renewable fuels and the effects of global warming as a consequence of burning fossil fuels.

"Over the last few years, the eco-committee has been monitoring our energy consumption so we are looking forward to seeing the effect of these panels on our energy consumption in the future."
