IF you’ll excuse me for being incredibly English, I’d like to talk about the weather. Don’t try and deny it, you know you’ve talked of nothing else for days.
The snow and freezing weather has brought Britain to a standstill – according to some newspaper reports.
Undoubtedly that is true of some areas but thankfully not here in Worcestershire.
Here, I would say the weather was an inch or two short of perfect.
We had some snow, which was great for the kids (little and big) and probably not bad for the shops.
A few of the sledges I saw out and about looked like the ones I have been walking past on my way into the supermarket for the past three months.
Presumably they ordered in bulk after last year and were probably starting to wonder if they would ever be sold.
After the snow, it quickly warmed up which meant we had a day to enjoy it and then it was pretty much gone. It was a Sunday to boot so no excuses for not getting out there.
A couple more inches would have been perfect because then we might have been able to build a snowman as well – but who is going to complain about that?
Well, somebody probably because there is nothing like some inclement weather to send people into a hysterical spin.
First there was the will we, won’t we? debate. Everyone was talking about it despite the fact we had a prediction (3pm on Saturday), which was pretty much spot on.
Then there was the usual panic buying of milk and bread.
Why?
If you don’t mind me pointing it out, this was little more than a flurry of snow.
These days the advice when it snows is not to go out at all, which is probably wise.
Bad weather can – literally – be a killer so it is best to take precautions, but can I just say Worcestershire is hardly the Arctic Circle.
And anyway, even the gritters had done their job this year. By Friday night there was grit, quite literally, all over the place.
Great work you say? Well, I did overhear some people in the post office complaining because there was – wait for it – too much grit.
Apparently it was ALL OVER the pavement.
I despair.
Frankly, I think a bit more grit – of the determination kind – wouldn’t go amiss sometimes.
