Brothers compete for championship Brothers compete for championship

MALVERN’S Three Counties Showground was once again the venue for the Welsh National Championship show, which brought Welsh ponies and cobs from a wide swathe of Britain to the venue at the foot of the famous hills.

The show, which was open to full and part-breds, consisted of two separate events with ridden and in-hand showing classes, working hunter, dressage and harness classes.

New for this year were the four Horse of the Year Show/Ridden Pony of the Year Championship qualifiers that attracted large entries as the event settles into its new home, having moved from the traditional venue at Shrewsbury in 2010.

The champion was Pennal the Great ridden by Fiona Cork, which had won both NFU Mutual and ringside ridden classes at this year’s National Pony Society Show.

The championship and reserve of the silver medal section As from 84 entries ended up in an unprecedented coincidence.

Stephen Greenwood’s four-yearold stallion Pentrefelin Playboy was champion and reserve was his full-brother, Liz Hampton’s three-year-old colt Pentrefelin Playmate. Both are two promising young males with spectacular movement.

There was a superb gathering of Welsh cob brood mares, which were greatly admired and received much applause, so it was not surprising that they received the championship placings over the stallions and young stock.

The champion was Geoff Schofield’s Hollytree Daisy shown by Scott Gibbons and reserve was taken by Hywi Mari shown by Patrick McBride.
