YOUNG riders are invited to a social event this weekend.

Croome Pony Club is holding an open afternoon on Sunday for people interested in finding out about membership.

The event at the Lenches Club, Church Lench, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm, is free to attend and designed to showcase the fun members of all ages have at the club, as well as the training and competition opportunities available to young riders.

Founded in England in 1929 and granted independent charitable status in 1997, there are about 345 pony club branches and 600 centres in the UK.

The pony club has a worldwide membership of more than 110,000, making it the largest association of young riders.

Many British team members and medallists were pony club members in their youth. Croome Pony Club celebrated its 80th birthday last year.

Pony club objectives are: Å To encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding.

Å To give instruction in riding and horsemastership and to educate members to look after and to take proper care of their animal.

Å To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty to create strength of character and selfdiscipline.

Membership is available to children until the end of the pony club year in which they become 21 years old.

Associate membership is available for those aged over 21 until the end of the pony club year in which they become 25, providing they have previously been a member.

Activities run by the Croome branch include training in all disciplines – from basic to advanced – an annual camp, Christmas party on horseback, themed awards dinner and the opportunity to compete in teams.

Sarah Roberts, Croome Pony Club district commissioner, said: “We have a very friendly branch with members sharing a common bond of a love of riding. All the training managers and many current members will be there on Sunday to answer any questions.”
