IF, like me, you use your computer a lot – for work, keeping in touch with friends or whatever – you cannot fail to have noticed the proliferation of blogs and social networking sites recently. I can’t seem to turn on my computer these days without being invited to check out what others are up to, whether it is friends, colleagues or complete strangers.
I find these sites fascinating – especially when I can combine finding out about other people’s lives with a little light shopping.
One such site is the excellent blog put together by Neil Chambers, co-founder along with his wife Penny of the excellent Handmade Scotch Egg Company.
Farmers’ market regular Neil updates the site regularly, with details of staff family events, what’s going on in their kitchen and, most importantly, details of their fabulous new products. In a recent post, there is a picture and description of their Yoats – egg yolks only, wrapped in saddleback pork and finished in proper Scottish oats. Delicious.
Neil writes that he cannot promise to have them around all the time, “but they are a real treat on high days and holidays”.
The Handmade Scotch Egg Company has been a terrific success, starting six years ago at the Teme Valley Farmers’ Market with just six varieties of egg to choose from. They now have more than 30, including vegetarian and wheat-free. Most of the pork is closely linked with another Worcestershire Farmers’ Market regular – it is supplied by Andrew and Cheryl Keysell of Rochford Country Meats.
The pork used is free range, while all the ingredients are of the highest quality. The company is not just about scotch eggs, of course, they also offer Wee Ones, which are the same as their larger cousins, but using the best quality quail’s eggs. Then there are Jumbles – trays of delicious, flavoured meat for you to cook with at home. The firm’s website handmadescotcheggs.co.uk includes a link to Penny’s Jumble book which has lots of recipes.
You’ll find the Handmade Scotch Egg Company at today’s Worcestershire Farmers’ Market, in Abbey Road, Malvern, from 9am until 2pm. Next week’s market is on Saturday, April 25, from 9.30am until 2pm at St Peter’s Garden Centre, Norton, Worcester. For more information, log on to wfmg.co.uk.
