Farmers Markets : Caroline Wright 25 April 2009

THE sun is now shining regularly, the days are getting longer and things are popping up all over – yes, it is definitely time to get back into the garden and start thinking about all things floral.

If, like me, you tend to let the garden run to seed a bit over the winter, now is the perfect time to head to your nearest Worcestershire Farmers’ Market for some locally-grown plants to spruce things up a bit.

Depending on which market you attend, you will find the Chaddesley Growers, Meadow Days, Four Acres Nurseries and Blue Gecko Plants stalls, all packed full of fantastic seasonal offerings just waiting for you to take them home and plant them up.

The advantage of buying your plants from these suppliers is, of course, the fact that you can talk to the people that actually grew the plants.

Ask for advice, tips on growing, where is best to plant whatever you’re buying, what sort of soil is right for that variety – whatever you like.

And all for just the price of the plant.

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a closer look at what plants are on offer at this time of year at your farmers’ markets, including bedding plants, vegetables and hanging baskets.

Linda Davies, of Four Acres Nurseries, near Pershore, has a huge variety of plants to get you gardening this spring.

Linda said: “We have decided to have lots of vegetables this year – they are planted in 9cm pots so they are lovely, healthy little plants ready to grow on at home.

We have cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, courgettes, sweetcorn and Brussels sprouts.

For the first time this year we also have tubs of potatoes ready for your patio. You just need to add soil to them and, before long, you’ll have your own crop.”

Linda also has a selection of culinary herbs and herbaceous perennials and will be at The Fold tomorrow and at Royal Worcester Porcelain next weekend.

This weekend’s farmers’ markets are at St Peter’s Garden Centre, Norton, near Worcester, from 9.30am until 2pm today and The Fold, Bransford, from 10am to 2pm tomorrow.

Next weekend’s markets are on Saturday, May 2, from 9am until 2pm in Victoria Square, Droitwich, and on Sunday, May 3, from 10am until 2pm at Royal Worcester Porcelain.
