HAVE you ever wandered around a Worcestershire farmers’ market and and thought: “I could do that”?

Well, now could be a good time to turn that thought into reality, as farmers’ market organisers have some vacancies for certain producers.

One of the most popular misconceptions about farmers is that they all own vast tracts of land.

In fact, quite a few of the stallholders at your local farmers’ markets have no land at all (and have no need for it with what they sell), while others rent their land and work hard on it to make a living.

Worcestershire farmers’ market organisers have vacancies for cheese producers, an olives and garlic stall, homemade sweets, game, preserves and chutneys, and fish. Locally made craft stalls are also welcome.

If you have a different idea about what to sell, however, call the group secretary Maureen Marklew (07795 656148), or co-ordinator Henry Wormington (07795 656149).

Of course, there are rules about what you can and can’t sell on your stall – you can’t buy produce from somewhere else and re-sell it for a profit.

Mrs Marklew said: “We are looking for lots of new producers for different markets around the county.

“There’s a big demand for game – we are constantly being asked for it.

“There are lots of people who enjoy venison, rabbit, partridge, pheasant and the like.

“Being a farmers’ market producer is a great way to make a living.

“People are demanding better quality, fresher products and it’s very nice to be able to produce these for your customers.

“It’s a friendly atmosphere on the markets with lots of regular customers, who enjoy what you produce and give you great feedback.

“Perhaps, in this economic climate, more people would like to come and make a living being a farmers’ market stallholder.”

So, if you have an idea, why not give it a try?

Today’s farmers’ market is at St Peter’s Garden Centre, Worcester, from 9.30am until 2pm. Your next market is on Saturday, February 5, from 9am until 2pm in Victoria Square, Droitwich.
