IS there anything in this world more delicious than a sausage sandwich? Well, for some, maybe – but for a heck of a lot of us the humble sausage sandwich is about the tastiest snack you can imagine.

So, as this is British Sandwich Week, there is no better time to get yourself down to your next Worcestershire Farmers’ Market and pick up some of the very best bread, sausages and other sandwich ingredients that you will be able to find anywhere.

Across the whole of Britain we buy more than three billion ready-made sandwiches a year – which is a bit mad, seeing as the very best sandwiches are those we make ourselves. Still, the sandwich industry employs more than 300,000 people, which is no bad thing.

However, no shop-bought sandwich can ever rival the taste of a fresh, home-made sausage sandwich.

You will find a fabulous variety of sausages at your local farmers’ market, some of which you will be able to try before you buy.

There are all manner of sausage varieties on the Vicarage Farm stall, including lamb and mint, lamb and redcurrant, pork and apple, pork and leek, venison – and plenty more besides.

Stallholder Henry Wormington says: “We have been making ham and asparagus sausages recently and they are going down very well with the customers.”

You can also head to the Rochford Country Meats and Elmore Farm Foods stalls for more sausage varieties.

For the freshest bread, make your way to the Churches Bakery, Hanley Swan Bakery or 19 Gales stalls – there is a wide range to choose from, so pick your favourite.

Fancy a bit of pickle or chutney in your sandwich?

There are some fantastic choices on the Country Markets, Akiki Organics, Cottage Cakes and plenty of other stalls, too. Have a wander around your next farmers’ market and make the most of the choices on offer.
