GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Planting new raspberry canes Stuck in winter but dreaming of delicious summer fruits?
Now is the time to plant new raspberry canes, which can be bought in bundles and then planted in an airy spot which enjoys the sunshine for at least half the day.
It's best to dig a trench and work in some well-rotted organic matter before covering it with soil and a sprinkling of bone meal.
The soil should be free-draining and on the acid side. A post and wire support for summer raspberries is ideal, allowing for air circulation.
Plant the canes in a straight line at the base of the wires, spacing them 38-45cm (15-18in) apart. Summer raspberries should crop in the second year.
Good varieties include Glen Moy', an early cropper with berries from late June, Glen Ample' and Malling Delight', both of which have excellent flavour.
