IN a peaceful setting just adjacent to the Wyre Forest can be found a truly beautiful garden. Norma and Colin Page’s earthly paradise in the delightful village of Button Bridge, on the Worcestershire/Shropshire border really has to be visited.
The three-quarters of an acre garden, lovingly created by the couple in 2003, had previously been in use as a pony paddock.
It was covered in old trees, nettles and brambles before being transformed into a place of beauty and tranquillity by Mr and Mrs Page, who have nurtured a variety of flowers, trees and shrubs on their land.
Clearing the area and opening up a new drive allowed more light and this enabled the couple to put in flower beds.
The approach is along a grassy drive of about 300ft in length which then leads to an L-shaped garden which has a number of trees, including bay, walnut, holly, silver birch, magnolia, pittosporum, cherry and fir. They all add interest and shape to the garden.
Various herbaceous beds have also been developed to display a mixture of perennials, including hostas, geraniums and roses.
Many of the beds are supplemented by Mrs Page’s painted artwork and amusement is created with abstract items and home-made statues.
Additional interest has been added by the use of stoneware, mirrors, obelisks, arches and arbours, together with timberbased structures.
A pool is centrally placed and contains goldfish, koi and golden orfe. Water lilies provide shade for the fish.
Mr Page said: “We opened in 2008 and even though it was a terrible summer we still had near enough 200 visitors. We hope for far greater numbers this year. It’s a placid location and the garden is within fields and the Wyre Forest is adjacent.
“Our garden may be described as tranquil and interesting to young and old.”
The garden is open to visits as part of the National Garden Scheme tomorrow and again in June.
Hunters End is six miles northwest of Bewdley. Take the A4194 from Bewdley. At Button Bridge, turn right down Button Bridge Lane. The garden is three-quarters of a mile on the left. Look out for a horse’s head on the gates and car parking directions.
