We like rambling on routes with interest

NOT quite walking on water, but very nearly. For when the Sunday walkers of Worcester Ramblers Group (WRG) went for a wander down by the river Avon at Strensham Lock, near Tewkesbury, they had to be careful to stay on the straight and narrow otherwise they’d have got very wet indeed.

Having met at Eckington Bridge, 15 members of the group walked down to the lock where they crossed on to the island and followed a footpath to the bridge across the weir.

Dave Chapman, one of the group’s leaders, said: “This wellhidden piece of pathway must be one of the most spectacular sections of footpath around the county.

“Standing over the weir with the sound of the river thundering in your ears and watching the sheer volume of water cascading over the weir right under your feet is magificent. It really is a place to pause and enjoy.”

The Sunday morning walkers of WRG are a small – only 12-16 strong – but enthusiastic band, who prefer their pace to be more leisurely and are therefore ideal companions for new walkers.

The walks are between four to six miles and usually have something of interest along the way, such as outstanding views, a section of river or a historic building.

Afterwards some members ramble along to the nearest pub or coffe shop for sustaining refreshments.

Among the walks planned in the near future are from Worcester Woods Countryside Centre (February 14); the Fox pub at Bransford (February 21); British Camp, Malvern (March 7) and the Pump House Environment Centre, Barbourne, Worcester (March 21) for a walk alongside the river Severn.
