POLLS open today for an election that has been called historic by many.

Historic elections and referendums seem to have become an annual event in recent years.

Remember when this election was announced back in April, and Brenda from Bristol’s brilliant reaction after being told the news by a BBC reporter.

“You’re joking. Not another one,” she said.

I’m sure there were many who shared this reaction, but the danger is people will not be bothering to vote, thinking there will be another soon.

If you have registered I urge you to make the trip to the polling station.

Voting is a right we shouldn’t take for granted, and exercising that democratic right is so important.

Every vote really does count, so don’t waste it on nothing.

At risk of being patronising the get out and vote message is even more important for young people.

At the last election 58 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds voted - the lowest of all age groups.

This figure was actually considered a good thing as it was an improvement on previous elections.

Whoever you are voting for and whatever your age, the main thing is to get out and vote, and be part of the democratic process.

The polling stations are open from 7am and close at 10pm.

And remember tonight we’ll be running a live blog, bringing you first news of all the results across the county.

• You may remember I challenged Piers Morgan on his recent tweets criticising Ariana Grande for leaving the country immediately after the bombing at her Manchester concert.

My view was Ariana Grande, understandable, wanted to be with her family, but Piers was having none of it hitting back in tweets to me and others.

Piers has now apologised to the 22-year-old after she helped organise the excellent benefit concert, which raised money for the victims, after visiting some in hospital.

Piers said: “You’re an admirable young woman” and added he had “misjudged her”.

A welcome apology - but I can’t help feeling this whole thing was orchestrated in an attempt to get media coverage, and more twitter followers.

Maybe that’s me just being cynical. The proof will be in what he tweets in future.
