Keep cool and look great on the courts

WITH the tennis season in full swing and no hope of Sir Cliff Richard singing at Wimbledon this year, I don’t think I could really have chosen anything else for this week’s shopping page.

What is great about Wimbledon is that it really gets tennis into the nation’s heart. I don’t think there could be a better game at keeping fit, learning new skills and meeting friends to have a game or two with.

For ladies, there has always been a keen interest in fashion on and off court, and this year is no exception, with white, of course, being the main colour – but there is also the new Skort, a great invention, especially if you are a bit selfconcious about your legs. It is a mix between a light-weight gym skirt with gym-shorts sewn in.

Knowles Sport on Broad Street, Worcester, has a huge range of tennis items to get you started and can help with any questions you have from footwear to rackets that are good for your size and budget.

Rick Knowles, owner of the store said it is important to get the right sized racket.

“It’s not just about getting the cheapest racket about. There are so many things to consider, such as the size of the grip, the length of the racket and also what it is made of.

“A good player generates the pace of the ball but a beginners racket will help with this.

“It is also important that for children the racket isn’t too big as this can make it difficult for them to learn properly as they may not be able to hold the racket properly.”

Mr Knowles said shoes were also important and it was not just a case of wearing your fashion trainers or running shoes.

“I really can’t stress enough that people should wear shoes made for playing tennis. They should give good grip and support the foot as it is running about the court. These are very different to ones which are for running.

“Tennis really is a great sport to get into whatever your age. It is a good way to keep active, gets your legs moving and is lots of fun too as it is a very sociable sport. There are lots of clubs in and around Worcester which will run taster sessions to give you the basics and are well worth getting in touch with.”
