How to achieve that real red carpet look

THERE’S so much more to the Oscars than films.

This year’s Academy Awards’ red carpet saw the likes of Sandra Bullock and Carey Mulligan pulling out the stops to try to outshine each other.

But creating a glamorous look worthy of an Oscar doesn’t have to be purely for the stars. Do it at home with some advice for Worcester’s own glamour gurus.

THE MAKE-UP

Elysia, near Inkberrow, distributes the Dr Hauschka organic skincare and cosmetics range used by A-list celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Kate Moss and Madonna. For a glamorous look that’s easy to achieve yourself, Elizabeth King of Dr Hauschka UK recommends a smoky look for your eyes.

Elizabeth suggests blending a smoky colour (such as Dr Hauschka Kajal Eyeliner 02 Elegante Soft Grey) over the whole eyelid, then smudging it along your bottom lash line and into the inner corner of your eye.

Follow this with a lighter colour over the top, again on your eyelid and lower lash. This adds depth and will make your eyes smoulder.

Then carefully blend a smoky grey (such as Dr Hauschka Eyeshadow Palette 04 Anthracite) along the socket line, and just below the brow bone blend a lighter, golden colour to highlight your eyes.

For full-on glamour, finish with several coats of black mascara, best applied looking down into a mirror from above, to coat the lashes from the roots, for maximum A list glitz.

THE HAIR

Whatever your length and colour, Oscars glamour is achievable at home, providing you have the know-how and the right products.

Shirley Thornhill of Umberto Giannini hair salon in Pump Street is used to creating Oscar-worthy hair in the salon’s new walk-in Style Bar. Gorgeous with an edge is their call for looking Oscarfabulous.

Traditional up-dos are still overtly feminine but with a unkempt, undone vibe.

For the perfect Oscars look, keep hair purposely dishevelled with lots of loose tendrils and a long, thick, sweeping fringe that frames the face and let the back of your hair do all the talking with an intricately but loosely designed up do of pinned curls. Perfect for that glamorous but cool, off-duty Grecian Goddess feel.

THE DRESS

For the red carpet star dress, Gill Mills from Promesse on The Tything, Worcester, says. “Glitzy form-fitting mermaid and A-line gowns are ideal for formal events.

The sexy one-shoulder silhouette remains very strong for 2010 and designers have introduced beautiful bold and colourful prints. Always very popular with Promesse clients are gowns by PiaMichi which will always be seen on the red carpet as they are regularly worn by top models and celebrities.”

THE COCKTAIL

To finish off your evening, make your own Oscars cocktail – created exclusively for Worcester News readers by Worcester’s Glasshouse restaurant (makes one cocktqail: ● Purée raspberries with a little icing sugar, enough for 50ml Add 25ml cognac, mix in champagne glass and top up with champagne.
