Mineral make-up is the new trend for the start of 2009 and there is a wide selection of products available from many well-known brands. The pigments in most mineral cosmetics are pure and undiluted. They give you far superior cover, which means better value money. For a natural coverage, you only need a small amount, which means that your make-up will not run out so quickly, saving you pennies. With this range of make-up, you don't need to go overboard as less is more.

• The Body Shop has brought out a great new make-up range, the Nature’s Minerals make-up. All products are preservative and fragrance free and dermatologically tested. All their brushes are free from animal hair and come in their own protective pouches.

The products include Natures Minerals Foundation SPF25, which is available in six natural-looking shades costing £15. For great results this is best applied with the Nature’s Minerals foundation brush £15 that has been designed extra dense to ensure a more even coverage.

Nature’s Mineral cheek colour are feather light powders which provide a flush of shimmering colour and are available in four soft shades costing £10. These are best applied with using the Nature’s Minerals blusher brush £14.

Nature’s Minerals eye colours are long-lasting, easy to blend colours which come in six pearlescent shades £9. These are best applied with using the Nature’s Mineral eye shadow brush which will ensure the eye colours are applied evenly and smoothly for a lasting effect £10.

• Max Factor has introduced a Natural Minerals foundation, which is softly textured, has a light reflecting effect on the skin and also has a built-in brush.
• L'Oreal has produced a wide range of beauty products called True Match Minerals. These include SPF15 foundation, eye-shadow, concealer, mattifying powder, blusher, illuminating powder, bronzing pearls and a kohl eyeliner. They are all a gentle formula enriched with minerals, which have been designed for all skin types. L’Oreal say they can help protect the skin against premature ageing and gives you a flawless-looking complexion that looks natural, even and long-lasting. These products are all available from Boots.

• Maybelline has a range of mineral products - Pure liquid mineral foundation in eight shades and Pure mineral foundation in five shades. Maybelline says these are kind to your skin and just one application will stay well and last all day.

• Prescriptives from House of Fraser have a 100ml foundation mineral make-up SPF 15, which is suitable for all skin types £25. There is an extensive collection of 18 shades, so you can find your exact match in this long-wear powder foundation.

The secret to applying your mineral range of make-up is to make sure you use the right tools.

The beauty of using mineral make-up is that it gives a smooth, even and natural look. You need to make sure that you get just the right amount of powder on your brush and no more.

It is best to use a densely-packed brush and dip it well into your powder so that it gets into the bristles. Tap off the excess, swirl and buff. Remember to build your colour up gradually rather than caking it on in one go.
